MAN FOUND WITH METH AFTER FOOT CHASE WITH POLICE  

A man was arrested by Poplar Bluff Police Saturday following a foot pursuit.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, an officer observed 22 year old Tyler Tippen, of Poplar Bluff, riding a bicycle Saturday evening. The officer knew Tippen had a warrant and attempted to make a stop.

Tippen allegedly jumped off his bike and fled on foot through a wooded area. He was placed under arrest following a short pursuit. During a search of Tippen, the officer found a small hand tool that contained a small baggie of a crystal like substance that later field tested positive for methamphetamine.

Tippen was taken to the Butler County Justice Center on charges of possession of drugs – methamphetamine and resisting arrest.

BLOOMFIELD MAN FACING DRUG CHARGES OUT OF POPLAR BLUFF

A Bloomfield man was taken into custody early Monday morning on multiple drug charges.

Deputy Chief Jeff Rolland with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells us that 28 year old Jousha Lee Holderfield was arrested after an officer observed a green leafy substance in plain view next to Holderfield’s lap. A capped syringe and a bottle of blue pills were also found during a search.

At the Butler County Justice Center an official conducted a strip search on Holderfield and found a white bag hanging out of a body cavity. The white crystal substance was seized and field tested positive for methamphetamine.

Holderfield is facing charges including possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

DONIPHAN MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON BURGLARY WARRANT

Authorities say a Doniphan man was taken into custody Monday on a burglary warrant.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 30 year old Rodney Wilson was arrested at around 12:30 pm Monday in Ripley County on a probation and parole warrant for burglary.

Following the arrest, Wilson was held at the Doniphan Police Department.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE WARRANTS IN BUTLER COUNTY

A Poplar Bluff man was recently taken into custody in Butler County on multiple warrants.

Sergeant Clark Parrott with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that 24 year old Joshua Collins was arrested Monday afternoon on seven warrants.

The warrants were for multiple charges including driving while suspended/revoked and failure to appear for passing bad checks.

MAN ACCUSED OF HEAD BUTTING A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER

A Sikeston man is accused of assaulting a law enforcement officer during an incident over the weekend.

Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter tells KWOC News that officials with the Scott County Sheriff’s Office and the Miner Police Department responded to a domestic disturbance Sunday at a residence in Sikeston.

While at the residence, officials made contact with 41 year old Rickey Tucker. A deputy attempted walk past Tucker when Tucker allegedly elbowed the deputy in the chest and pushed the deputy against the residence. Tucker then kept striking the deputy in the chest with his elbow.

Tucker was tased and placed in handcuffs. He continued to resist and is alleged to have head butted a Miner Police Officer on the left temple.

Walter says Tucker was taken to an area hospital where he attempted to bite a deputy and made threats he was going to have the deputy’s family killed.

After being cleared by medical staff, Tucker was transported to the Scott County Jail. He has been charged with three counts of felony assault on a law enforcement officer, felony resisting arrest, and misdemeanor property damage.

MAN IN CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO 2014 KENNETT SHOOTING

Authorities in Kennett say a man is in custody that was sought in connection to a 2014 shooting.

According to the Kennett Police Department, 22 year old Uzzi Caruthers, of Kennett, was arrested Friday night on multiple active warrants out of Dunklin County.

Caruthers had been wanted on a warrant for 1^st degree assault, armed criminal action, discharging a firearm at or from a motor vehicle, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Caruthers also had warrants for probation violations on original charges of property damage and tampering with a motor vehicle.

GIRL SCOUT REGISTRATION EVENT TO BE HELD THURSDAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

Area parents who want to get their young girls into the Girl Scouts will have a chance this week in Poplar Bluff.

A Girl Scouts Registration Event will be held from 5 to 7 pm Thursday at the Bess Center at Three Rivers College.

NAME RELEASED OF WOMAN KILLED IN STODDARD COUNTY FIRE

Updating a story we brought to you yesterday, authorities in Stoddard County have released the name of a woman who died in a fire Tuesday night.

63 year old Janet Kay Stephens was killed in the fire at a mobile home near Advance. An autopsy has been scheduled for today.

Authorities are still investigating a cause for the fire.

14 ARRESTED ON VARIOUS BUTLER COUNTY WARRANTS WEDNESDAY MORNING

14 people were taken into custody Wednesday morning on various Butler County warrants.

Sergeant Clark Parrott with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that all but one of the arrests were executed in Butler County with the other happening in Carter County.

Almost all of the warrants were for drug related charges.

COMMUNITY ALLIANCE PROGRAM TO BE HELD THIS MONTH AT HIGHWAY PATROL TROOP E HEADQUARTERS

The Missouri State Highway Patrol will be hosting a Community Alliance Program beginning this month at the Troop E headquarters in Poplar Bluff.

The program will begin on Monday, September 21st and will meet on six consecutive Monday evenings from 6:30 pm to 9 pm. The curriculum will familiarize participants with many Patrol policies and procedures.

These sessions will cover many Patrol policies and procedures; including traffic stops, traffic crash investigation, firearms familiarization, SWAT operations, and many other aspects of the Patrol. The program will conclude with an awards banquet on November 2nd.

UNITED STATES SENATOR DONATES COMPUTERS TO POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL

A United States Senator has selected a Poplar Bluff School to receive five used computers as a part of the Computers for Schools program.

Senator Claire McCaskill chose Lake Road Elementary School to get the computers which were placed in first grade classrooms last week.

The computers will be utilized for differentiated instruction during group exercises, according to Lake Road educators.

Lake Road was the only school in Southeast Missouri selected to receive the computers under the national yearly program.

POLICE WORKED ON POPLAR BLUFF STORM SIREN WEDNESDAY

Poplar Bluff police tell KWOC News that maintenance was done on an area Storm Siren Wednesday.

Crews were working on the storm siren near Cedar and Moran and that could have caused various tones or alerts to happen in the middle of the day.

Anyone who heard the sounds should disregard them.

MAN REPORTEDLY CAUGHT DRIVING WHILE INTOXICATED WITH MULTIPLE CHILDREN IN THE VEHICLE

A Poplar Bluff man is facing multiple charges after he was reportedly found driving while intoxicated with multiple children in the vehicle.

Poplar Bluff Deputy Police Chief Jeff Rolland tells KWOC News that an officer initiated a traffic stop on 48 year old Michael Allen Tuesday morning.

The officer found beer and an open bottle of whisky in the vehicle along with four children under the age of five who were sitting in the back seat without child safety seats or a seatbelt.

Allen was taken into custody on charges of driving while intoxicated and four counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

BUTLER COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY FOR A PIPE REPLACEMENT

Route VV in Butler County will be closed today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can replace a pipe under the roadway.

The work zone will be located one mile from Route B.

Work will be performed today from 8 am to 2 pm.

SIKESTON MAN SOUGHT ON ATTEMPTED RAPE CHARGE

Authorities in Sikeston are searching for an area man who is who is wanted on charges of attempted rape.

Captain James McMillen with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety tells KWOC News that they are looking for 21 year old Anthony Price, of Sikeston.

The charges stem from an allegation of an attempted sexual assault from August 28th.

PUXICO MAN ARRESTED ON CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE CHARGE

A Puxico man is facing a drug related charge following his arrest in Stoddard County.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 23 year old Xavier Jones was recently taken into custody on a warrant for possession of a controlled substance.

His bond was set at $5,000 and he has since bonded out.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN FOUND IN POSSESSION OF METHAMPHETAMINE AND MARIJUANA

A Poplar Bluff man is facing charges after he was found in possession of methamphetamine and marijuana.

Deputy Chief Jeff Rolland with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that 49 year old Donald Pickard was arrested Sunday on charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, and multiple active warrants.

Rolland says that an officer found Pickard in possession of a small plastic baggie containing a substance that field tested positive for the presence of methamphetamine and a plastic cylinder shaped container that had marijuana.

Pickard was also in possession of a glass smoking pipe and a marijuana smoking pipe.

MAN FACING CHARGE OF TAMPERING WITH A MOTOR VEHICLE

Authorities in Poplar Bluff arrested a man last Friday following a report of a stolen vehicle from a Stoddard County Business.

Officers found the vehicle in Poplar Bluff driven by 37 year old Randall J. Moore Jr. Moore was arrested on charges of 1st degree tampering with a motor vehicle and driving while revoked.

GIDEON MAN RUNNING FROM MICHIGAN TO POPLAR BLUFF TO RAISE MONEY FOR ST. JUDE

A Gideon man is running over 600 miles to raise money for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

66 year old Dale Manning is scheduled to begin his run today from Hartford, Michigan. Manning is aiming to complete 30 miles each day before finally ending at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center on September 29th.

MAN SENTENCED IN STOLEN VEHICLE CASE

A man has been sentenced in Stoddard County in connection to a stolen vehicle case.

According to Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney Russell Oliver, 41 year old Michael Davis was sentenced on September 2nd to 13 years incarceration on a felony charge of stealing.

The value of the property stolen was reportedly over $25,000.

MAN ARRESTED IN POPLAR BLUFF FOR RESISTING ARREST AND PEACE DISTURBANCE

An intoxicated man was taken into custody following an incident Monday night in Poplar Bluff.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, an officer was dispatched to a residence in reference to a domestic assault.

At the scene a witness told the officer that 47 year old Mark Gregoire had become intoxicated and started making threats at multiple people inside the residence.

When the officer tried to take Gregoire into custody he took an aggressive stance and refused to move. After multiple attempts to get Gregoire to get into the patrol unit, an officer deployed a taser and applied a drive stun to the upper back area.

The man then got into the patrol unit with further incident.

Gregoire has been charged with resisting arrest and peace disturbance.

ONE DEAD, ANOTHER SERIOUSLY INJURED FOLLOWING WRECK NEAR DEERING  

A Bragg City man is dead following a wreck Saturday morning in Pemiscot County.

Sergeant Clark Parrott with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that the wreck occurred when a vehicle driven by 53 year old Carolyn Lane, of Hayti, allegedly failed to yield and pulled into the path of a vehicle driven by 78 year old Carmen Munoz.

Munoz, who was reportedly not wearing a safety device, was pronounced dead a short time after the wreck. Lane suffered serious injuries and was transported to a Kennett hospital.

MAN CHARGED WITH INVOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER FOLLOWING RIPLEY COUNTY WRECK

An O’Fallon, Missouri man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter following a Sunday afternoon wreck in Ripley County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a nine year old boy was driving a Ford Expedition on a County Road near Oxly when the vehicle ran off the roadway, hit an embankment, and overturned.

The boy was ejected from the vehicle, as was a 14 year old boy and 37 year old Mitchell Morris, of O’Fallon. The teenager was pronounced dead at the scene.

Morris suffered moderate injuries in the wreck. According to a Sergeant Clark Parrott, Morris has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, child endangerment, and allowing a person who had no legal right to drive a motor vehicle.

KENNETT POLICE INVESTIGATING REPORTS OF SHOTS BEING FIRED

Police in Kennett are investigating reports of shots being fired early Sunday morning.

According to the Kennett Police Department, shortly after 1:30 am Sunday, officers were dispatched to the Eagles Club in reference to shots being fired. When officers attempted to talk with individuals at the scene, everyone stated that they did not see or hear anything and no one was shot.

Less than an hour later, officers were dispatched to the corner of Baldwin and Commercial in reference to shots being fired. When officers arrived they heard shots being fired as well. Individuals at the scene however said they had not seen or heard anything.

Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to contact the Kennett Police Department.

ARKANSAS MAN REPORTEDLY FOUND WITH MULTIPLE CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

A Rector man is facing multiple drug charges in connection to his arrest Friday evening in Dunklin County.

According to authorities, 23 year old Steven Kirkpatrick was taken into custody at around 5:30 pm Friday on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance for hydrocodone and oxycodone.

Kirkpatrick is also charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated and failure to yield for emergency equipment.

DUDLEY MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY OVER THE WEEKEND ON DRUG CHARGE

A Dudley man was arrested Saturday afternoon on meth related charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 47 year old Harold Goodale was taken into custody on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

Goodale also reportedly had a misdemeanor warrant out of Stoddard County for passing bad checks.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN REPORTEDLY CAUGHT WITH CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE IN CORRECTIONAL FACILITY

A Poplar Bluff man is facing multiple felony charges following his arrest Saturday night in Butler County.

According to the Highway Patrol, 32 year old Travis Pinnell has been charged with felony possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and possession of a controlled substance in a correctional facility.

Pinnell has also been charged with unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

MAN ARRESTED IN BUTLER COUNTY ON POSSESSION OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE CHARGE  

A Butler County man is facing a controlled substance charge following an incident on Tuesday.

Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs tells KWOC News that deputies found 40 year old Hershel Deaton Jr., of Poplar Bluff, walking around a residence in Wappapello. Deaton told deputies that he was allowed to be there, however a person in the residence said she did not know who Deaton was.

A deputy conducted a pat down and found a small clear bag that contained a white power substance in Deaton’s pocket.

Deaton was taken into custody on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.

PUXICO MAN ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGE

A Puxico man is facing a drug charge following his arrest in Stoddard County.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 31 year old Christopher Lee Elsworth was recently arrested on a warrant for possession of a controlled substance.

As of press time, Elsworth remains in jail on a $12,500 cash bond.

MAN ALLEGEDLY THREATENS TO BLOW UP STODDARD COUNTY CHURCH

A Dexter man is facing charges after he allegedly threatened to blow up a church.

The Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department tells KWOC News that 24 year old John Robert Wilkinson Jr. was arrested on a warrant for making terrorist threats with reckless disregard of closure of a building.

Wilkinson allegedly made the threats during an incident on August 26^th.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE SEARCHING FOR SHOPLIFTING SUSPECT

Authorities in Poplar Bluff are searching for an alleged shoplifting suspect.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, on August 31^st a loss prevention associate at Wal-Mart reported that a white male concealed cookie dough and drink mix packets in his pants and left the store without paying for the items.

When confronted by employees, the suspect fled the scene on foot.

CORNING POLICE OFFICER FACING DRUG CHARGES

An area police officer has been arrested on multiple drug related charges.

Scott Ellington, the District Prosecuting Attorney for the Second Judicial District of Arkansas, tells KWOC News that 39 year old James Martin Jr., of Paragould was arrested Tuesday while on duty at the Corning Police Department.

Martin is facing charges of use of a communication device to purchase a controlled substance, misuse of the Arkansas Crime Information Computer, and two counts of possession of a controlled substance.

MOVIE TO BE SHOWN TODAY AT POPLAR BLUFF MUNICIPAL LIBRARY

The Poplar Bluff Municipal Library is hosting a free showing of “The Croods” this afternoon.

The showing is a part of the Library’s Theater Thursday program and will begin at 4:30 pm in the library theater. Attendees will also get to enjoy free popcorn during the movie.

The Library is also reminding residents to get a library card as a part of National Library Card Month. The card is available for free for residents of Butler, Carter, Dunklin, Ripley, Stoddard, and Wayne Counties.

MISSOURI STUDENTS CAN USE THEIR DRAWING SKILLS TO EARN MONEY FOR COLLEGE

Missouri students in Kindergarten through 5^th grade have a chance to use their drawing skills to earn money for college.

Missouri State Treasurer Clint Zweifel tells KWOC News that he is asking students to draw a poster showing what they want to be when they grow up.

Two grand prize winners will each receive $1,500 contributions, and two People’s Choice winners will each receive $529 contributions.  There will be one grand prize winner in grades K-2 and one in grades 3-5.

CAMPBELL WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN ATV WRECK  

A Campbell woman was flown to a Memphis hospital following an ATV wreck early Tuesday morning.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 27 year old Trista Beltz was partially ejected from her ATV after it ran off of County Road 232 and struck a ditch.

Beltz was seriously injured and taken by air evac to Elvis Presley Trauma Center in Memphis.

LILBOURN MAN ARRESTED ON METH CHARGE

Authorities say a Lilbourn man is facing multiple felony charges in connection to his arrest in New Madrid County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 31 year old Justin Perry was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine, driving while intoxicated – drugs, tampering with a stolen vehicle, and driving while revoked.

Perry is also charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

GREENVILLE MAN FACING DRUG CHARGE OUT OF BUTLER COUNTY

A Greenville man is facing a drug charge out of Butler County following his arrest Tuesday morning.

Sergeant Clark Parrott with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that 30 year old Jeremy Luke was arrested shortly after 10 am Tuesday on charges of possession of a controlled substance – methadone and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Luke also reportedly had a failure to appear warrant out of Poplar Bluff for speeding and no insurance.

SOME BUTLER COUNTY RESIDENTS WITHOUT POWER THIS MORNING

Some Butler County residents are waking up without power this morning.

A representative with Ozark Border Electric Cooperative says some customers in Eastern Butler County have been without electricity since around 4:15 this morning.

The outage is due to a problem at an M and A substation and crews are working to get it resolved.

MALDEN MAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE WARRANTS

A Malden man has been taken into custody on multiple warrants.

According to the Malden Police Department, 52 year old Clifford Peel was arrested Monday on warrants for possession of a controlled substance and unlawful use of a weapon.

Peel was taken to the Malden City Jail on a $30,000 cash only bond.

31^ST ANNUAL LABOR DAY PICNIC TO BE HELD THIS WEEKEND IN WILLIAMSVILLE

The 31^st Annual Williamsville/Black River Fire Department Labor Day Picnic will be held this Friday and Saturday.

The picnic will be held at the Picnic Grounds of 4-A enterprises, next door to the Williamsville Elementary School. Event organizers tell KWOC News that there will be games for children, arts and crafts vendors, and bingo at the picnic in addition to the annual parade.

There are also multiple entertainers lined up for both days of the event. Entertainment starts at 5 pm on Friday and noon on Saturday.

MAN ARRESTED AFTER ALLEGEDLY RUNNING FROM OFFICER IN POPLAR BLUFF  

A man was taken into custody Sunday after he allegedly attempted to run from an officer in Poplar Bluff.

According to Poplar Bluff police, an officer was dispatched to a residence early Sunday morning in reference to a fight. When the officer arrived he observed a man walking away from the building.

The officer tried to make contact with the man, however he ran from the scene. The man, 42 year old Jason Thompson, of Poplar Bluff, was later found and taken into custody.

He was processed and released on a summons for resisting arrest or lawful detention.

ARREST MADE IN CONNECTION TO JULY SHOOTOUT IN SIKESTON

Authorities in Sikeston have arrested a man in connection to a shootout that occurred in late July.

James McMillen with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety tells KWOC News that 20 year old Orlando Sheron, of Sikeston, was taken into custody during a stop Friday.

Sheron was wanted on charges of 1^st degree assault, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon in connection to a shootout he allegedly had with Dewayne Harris Jr. on July 30^th. Police are still searching for Harris in connection to the incident.

During Sheron’s arrest, the department Canine “Levi” alerted on the vehicle Sheron was in for the presence of narcotics. Officers located a small amount of marijuana, a small set of digital scales, and a small amount of what appeared to be cocaine in the vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle 28 year old Brandon Johnson, of Sikeston, was taken into custody and is facing charges including possession of a controlled substance, hindering prosecution, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

HIGHWAY PATROL ANNOUNCES SOBRIETY CHECKPOINT TO BE HELD IN BUTLER COUNTY

Captain George Ridens with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that the patrol will be holding a sobriety checkpoint sometime this month in Butler County.

In addition to the checkpoint, officers in Southeast Missouri will also be conducting a driving while intoxicated saturation enforcement operation this month in seven counties including Butler, Stoddard, and Dunklin.

The saturation is a mobile operation in which troopers saturate a specific area in an effort to arrest impaired drivers.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE DEPARTMENT WARNING OF PHONE SCAM

The Poplar Bluff Police Department is warning area residents to be on the lookout for a phone scam.

According to Police Chief Danny Whiteley, a subject who identifies himself as David Green tells callers he is with Publisher's Clearinghouse and is contacting subjects, stating that they have "won the sweepstakes".

They then ask the person to go to a business and send money to a specific location by money-gram, money card, or western union. The caller will then say that after the money is sent, another person will contact them and "send the prize patrol".

Whiteley says the "callers" usually have a Middle Eastern accent and they are not based in the United States. If you receive this call you are advised to just hang up.

POPLAR BLUFF STUDENTS TO HAVE FOUR DAY WEEKEND

Poplar Bluff students will be enjoying a four day weekend starting on Friday.

Superintendent Chris Hon tells KWOC News that Poplar Bluff R-1 Schools will be dismissed on Friday for a teacher collaboration day and Monday for Labor Day.

The regular class schedule will resume on Tuesday.

MASTER GARDENER MEETING TO BE HELD TONIGHT IN POPLAR BLUFF

Anyone wishing to learn more about horticulture should attend the Master Gardener meeting scheduled for tonight in Poplar Bluff.

CAMPBELL MAN CLAIMS $275,000 IN MISSOURI LOTTO DRAWING

A Campbell man has won $275,000 from a Missouri Lotto drawing.

Bill Depew was one of two winners from the Missouri Lotto drawing on August 15^th for the 1.1 million dollar jackpot.

Depew, who purchased the ticket at a store in Hayti, says he plans on using the prize money to pay bills, however his wife says she is going to try to get him a new truck.

The Missouri Lottery says Depew chose the cash option, which puts the prize at $275,000 before taxes.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN FACING MURDER CHARGES IN CONNECTION TO BOLLINGER COUNTY SHOOTING  

A Poplar Bluff man is facing charges in connection to a shooting Friday night.

According to authorities, 31 year old Joshua Sharar and Vickie Williams were each shot and stabbed during an incident in Bollinger County.

Sharar died at an area hospital while Williams is in critical condition.

32 year old William Pickard, of Poplar Bluff was taken into custody following a chase in Butler County. He is facing charges of 1^st degree murder, armed criminal action, 1^st degree assault, and tampering with a motor vehicle.

WOMAN INJURED AFTER BEING HIT BY A VEHICLE IN KENNETT

A woman was injured Thursday after she was hit by a vehicle in Kennett.

According to the Kennett Police Department, two females told police they had been placing a child in a car seat when another vehicle backed out of a driveway across the street and backed into them. One of the woman suffered injuries during the incident.

The driver of the backing vehicle, 19 year old Christian Berry, of Kennett, was subsequently arrested for driving while intoxicated - drugs and no driver’s license.

THREE ARRESTED ON FELONY METH CHARGES IN RIPLEY COUNTY

Three people were arrested early Sunday morning in Ripley County on meth charges.

According to Sergeant Clark Parrott with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 26 year old Jeremy Riggs, of Poplar Bluff, along with 24 year old Frankie Brewer and 23 year old Brittany Brewer, of Doniphan, were taken into custody shortly after midnight Sunday morning.

The three are each facing felony meth related charges along with other charges.

GREENVILLE WOMAN ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGES

A Greenville woman was taken into custody over the weekend on drug charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 21 year old Paige Duncan was arrested Sunday afternoon in Butler County on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance.

Duncan is also facing a charge of possession of marijuana.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN IN CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO DISCOVERY OF BODY IN BUTLER COUNTY

Continuing with a story we broke for you last week, a Poplar Bluff man has been taken into custody in connection to the discovery of a dead body in Butler County.

Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs tells KWOC News that Edward William Weaver, of Poplar Bluff, has been arrested and is facing charges of 1^st and 2^nd degree murder for the death of 48 year old Norman Jones, also of Poplar Bluff.

Weaver is accused of killing Jones during an alleged drug deal. Jones’s body was found in a car trunk on County Road 355 between Harviell and Neelyville.

GRANDIN MAN INJURED IN ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING

A Grandin man reportedly shot himself in the torso on Saturday.

Carter County Sheriff Rick Stephens tells KWOC News that 24 year old Collin Kellerman appears to have accidently shot himself while showing a handgun to another person.

Kellerman was taken to a Poplar Bluff hospital following the shooting.

POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN ARRESTED ON ACTIVE WARRANTS

A Poplar Bluff woman was recently taken into custody on multiple active warrants.

According to Deputy Chief Jeff Rolland with the Poplar Bluff Police Department, 21 year old Carlee Eifert was found inside a residence on Foley Street and taken into custody on Wednesday.

While searching the residence an officer found a plate that contained a syringe and a spoon with residue on it.

Eifert was processed for possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia, and resisting arrest along with the two warrants.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS TO BEGIN TODAY IN BUTLER COUNTY

Route N in Butler County will be reduced to one lane over two days as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

Route N will be reduced between Route 51 and County Road 214 from 8:30 am to 4 pm both today and tomorrow.

AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATING DEAD BODY FOUND IN BUTLER COUNTY  

Following up on a story we broke for you yesterday, authorities are investigating after a body was found Thursday afternoon in Butler County.

Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs tells KWOC News that the Butler County Major Case Squad was activated following the discovery of a body in a car trunk on County Road 355 between Harviell and Neelyville.

Foul play is suspected in the death and an autopsy has been scheduled for today. The identity of the man found was not available.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN FACING CHARGE FOR ALLEGEDLY ASSAULTING A JUVENILE

A 45 year old Poplar Bluff man is facing a child abuse charge in connection to an incident on Tuesday.

According to Chief Deputy Brian Evans with the Butler County Sheriff’s Department, an officer was dispatched Tuesday evening to a residence in reference to a domestic in progress.

At the residence the reporting party told an officer that Zachariah Hampton had punched a juvenile. Hampton admitted to the officer that he had punched a juvenile relative and that he was sorry.

The victim reportedly had red marks on her chest and both arms.

Hampton was taken into custody on a charge of abuse of child.

GREENVILLE MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY FOR RESISTING ARREST IN WAYNE COUNTY

 A Greenville man is facing a felony charge following his arrest Thursday evening in Wayne County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 38 year old Justin Schmitt was arrested for felony resisting arrest and misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

Schmitt also reportedly had a felony probation parole warrant.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON FELONY DRUG WARRANT

Authorities say a Poplar Bluff man has been taken into custody on a felony drug related warrant.

Sergeant Clark Parrott with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that 38 year old Brian Hill was arrested Thursday in Cape Girardeau County on a felony warrant out of Wayne County for drug trafficking.

Hill has also been charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES FOUND DURING SEARCH IN SIKESTON

The execution of a search warrant in Sikeston has led the arrest of an area man.

Captain James McMillen with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety tells KWOC News that 41 year old Tiron Sylvester Mitchell, of Sikeston, was arrested after authorities found a weapon and controlled substances were found during a search.

McMillen says officers found a small caliber handgun, 34 grams of marijuana, 3 grams of methamphetamine and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Detectives are seeking felony charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of a controlled substance – scheduled narcotic with intent to distribute, and illegal possession of a firearm.

THREE RIVERS COLLEGE TO OFFER HISET TEST IN MALDEN

Three Rivers College will be offering a High School equivalence test next month in Malden.

The HiSET High School Equivalence Test will be administered on Saturday, September 19^th from 8 am to 4 pm at the college’s center in Malden.

The HiSET is an online test that covers writing, essay, math, science, social studies and reading. For more information or to register for the test, go online to hiset.ets.org. The deadline to register is September 16^th.

DICE RUN TO BE HELD THIS WEEKEND TO RAISE MONEY FOR ST. JUDE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

A Dice run is scheduled for this weekend to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

The Ride for a Cure Dice Run in Memory of Larry Maronay will begin at 1 pm on August 29^th at the Dexter Eagles Club. Registration will begin at 11 am.

The entry fee is $10 per bike and a $5 for additional riders. A motorcycle is not required to participate in the dice run; you can use any type of licensed vehicle. All proceeds will go to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES BID FOR SPORTS COMPLEX  

The Poplar Bluff School Board has approved a bid for the upcoming high school athletic complex.

Superintendent Chris Hon tells KWOC News that the low bid of approximately 5.8 million dollars was submitted by K&S Associates. The bid was around 1.8 million dollars over the estimate for the project with the additional money coming from reserve funds.

The bid was approved by a 4 to 3 vote.

DRIVERS ASKED TO BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR STRIPING CREWS

Motorists are advised to be cautious of striping vehicles that will be out across Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, to help reduce the impact to traffic, striping in cities and towns will take place overnight. Striping work will begin at 6 pm, with work ending at 4:30 am each day.

Drivers should be prepared to slow down significantly when coming up behind a slow-moving caravan of MoDOT striping trucks. The striping trucks move between 8 mph and 12 mph when work is underway.

BILLY JOE ROYAL TO PERFORM AT RODGERS THEATRE

Billy Joe Royal will be performing at the Rodgers Theatre in Poplar Bluff next week.

The show on September 4^th will feature some of Royal’s biggest hits including Down in the Boondocks, Cherry Hill Park, and I Knew You When.

FIRE REPORTED AT SAWMILL IN CARTER COUNTY

Authorities have contained a fire that broke out Wednesday at an area sawmill.

The fire was located at Anderson Sawmill near Garwood in Carter County.

Officials from multiple fire departments responded to help contain the blaze and no information was released on what the cause was. There has also not been any injuries reported.

SIKESTON POLICE SEARCHING FOR ALLEGED THIEF

Sikeston authorities are searching for a man in connection to an alleged theft at an area store.

According to Captain McMillen with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, a man entered Slusher’s Farm and Home on August 7^th and stole an undisclosed amount of merchandise.

An employee said the man left without paying for the items and drove off in a gold colored Nissan Altima.

AREA CREDIT UNION PURCHASES SHIRTS FOR HIGH SCHOOL BAND

The Poplar Bluff High School Sho-Me Band has new shirts thanks to the Ozark Federal Credit Union.

The Credit Union purchased 150 Neverland themed T-shirts for the band to wear this season.

According to Tim Krakowiak with the Poplar Bluff School District, Sho-Me Band Booster Club President Shelly Batton initially reached out to credit union officials, who said they were more than happy to oblige.

THREE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WIN $50 THROUGH TACO BELL PROGRAM

Three Poplar Bluff High School students recently won $50 each through a program sponsored by the Taco Bell Foundation for Teens.

Participants were asked what they would do with $50 to spread cheer throughout their school or community.

Sophomore Katie Sliger said she would donate her winnings to the Mules Booster Club; junior Gene Greer III stated he would buy his schoolmates donuts; and sophomore Garret Hudson vowed to purchase books for the library.

A teacher also won a $50 gift card thanks to a student nomination for the “Tip your Teacher” contest.

Math teacher Hope Conover was nominated by a student who, according to the award letter, wrote: “Mrs. Conover is the best teacher you will ever meet. If you have a problem, she will always take the time out of her day to help you with whatever.”

MAN CAUGHT DRIVING ALMOST 100 MILES PER HOUR IN 35 MPH ZONE  

A Poplar Bluff man is facing charges after he was caught driving almost 100 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone.

According to Deputy Chief Jeff Rolland with the Poplar Bluff Police Department, an officer clocked a vehicle driving 97 mph on south bound Highway 67 shortly before 4 am Tuesday.

The vehicle was pulled over and the driver was identified as Santiago Lira. Lira told the officer he was driving the way he was because he was going to get a hamburger.

Rolland tells KWOC News that Lira is facing charges of exceeding the posted speed limit by 20 mph or more, no valid license, and no seat belt.

EAST PRAIRIE MAN FACING DRUG CHARGES FOLLOWING WRECK IN MISSISSIPPI COUNTY

Authorities say an East Prairie man is facing drug related charges following a wreck Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 40 year old Michael T. Miller was driving a vehicle that hit a culvert and then a utility pole before overturning in Mississippi County.

Shortly after the wreck Miller was arrested on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance for morphine, xanax, and oxycodone.

Miller is also facing charges of driving while intoxicated, careless and imprudent driving resulting in an accident, and no seat belt.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI TROOPERS PREPARING FOR LABOR DAY TRAFFIC

Missouri State Highway Patrol Troopers in Southeast Missouri are preparing for the upcoming Labor Day holiday.

Captain George Ridens, commanding officer of Troop E in Poplar Bluff, tells KWOC News that troopers will be participating in enforcement operations throughout the Labor Day weekend.

Ridens says troopers will be participating in a statewide enforcement operation during the peak travel periods on Friday, September 4^th, and Monday, September 7^th.

During the operation, Troop E troopers will be assigned to Interstate 55 to maximize visibility. Enforcement efforts on secondary roads within Troop E will be conducted during the same time frame.

MUSIC TRIVIA NIGHT TO BE HELD IN MALDEN

A music trivia night will be held next month in Malden.

The event on Saturday, September 5^th, will be hosted by the Malden Arts Council at the Malden High School Gym.

ART SHOW TO BE HELD TO RAISE MONEY FOR AREA FIRE DEPARTMENT

The Highway “K” Volunteer Fire Department will be holding a art show and sale of works by an area artist.

The sale will be held at the Community Center in Doniphan on September 11^th and 12^th from 9 am to 5:40 pm on both days.

100 percent of all sales will go to the fire department for updating fire equipment for the fire fighters.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS TO CONTINUE TODAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

Crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation are in Stoddard County for pavement repairs on Route AC.

Route AC will be reduced to one lane today and tomorrow from Route 25 to County Road 232.

Work will take place from 7 am to 4 pm both days.

POPLAR BLUFF INTERSECTION CLOSED THROUGH MID SEPTEMBER

Katy Lane in Poplar Bluff will be closed through mid September so contractor crews can perform intersection improvements.

The work zone is located at the intersection of Katy Lane and Business 67. The road is scheduled to re-open on Sunday, September 13^th.

SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK CLAIMS LIFE OF POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN  

A Poplar Bluff woman died Monday afternoon in a single vehicle wreck.

According to Sergeant Clark Parrott with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 34 year old Michelle Vernon was killed in the wreck on Highway W, five miles north of Poplar Bluff.

Vernon’s vehicle had reportedly ran off the roadway and struck a tree. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE SEARCHING FOR WOMAN WHO ALLEGEDLY STOLE A LADIES WALLET

Police in Poplar Bluff are searching for a suspect who allegedly took a ladies wallet at Wal-Mart.

Police say that the wallet had been left behind by a customer and surveillance video showed a woman taking it from the counter at a register.

The video showed the white female leaving the store while wearing a black t-shirt that said “Fear This.”

POPLAR BLUFF MAN FOUND IN POSSESSION OF A SUBSTANCE BELIEVED TO BE METH

A Poplar Bluff man is facing charges after he was allegedly found in possession of a substance believed to be methamphetamine.

Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs tells KWOC News, that a deputy was dispatched to a residence in Poplar Bluff on Thursday in reference to a domestic disturbance.

At the residence the deputy found 18 year old Dylan Norman. A relative of Norman told authorities that Norman had become irate and had thrown things inside the home.

The deputy did a search of Norman and found a bag containing a white powder substance believed to be methamphetamine.

Norman was taken to the Butler County Justice Center on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.

MAN ARRESTED IN POPLAR BLUFF ON METH CHARGE

Authorities in Poplar Bluff say an area man has been taken into custody on drug related charges.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, James Joseph Taylor is facing charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Taylor was arrested Friday morning after an officer found numerous syringes along with a spoon with a residue that field tested positive for methamphetamine inside a backpack. Taylor told the officer that the backpack was his.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN SPRAYED WITH PEPPER SPRAY AFTER HE ALLEGEDLY SWUNG A HELMET AT A WOMAN

A Poplar Bluff man has been charged with assault in connection to an incident on Sunday.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, a woman told police that she had gotten into an argument with 51 year old Ralph Jones when he took off his helmet and swung it at her.

The woman then sprayed pepper spray in Jones face. Police say Jones was clearly intoxicated and rambling about making the woman pay for what she did. He was taken into custody on an assault charge.

WOMAN CAUGHT ATTEMPTING TO STEAL ITEMS FROM POPLAR BLUFF BUSINESS

A woman was taken into custody Sunday after she was caught allegedly attempting to steal multiple items from the Poplar Bluff Wal-Mart.

Deputy Chief Jeff Rolland with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that a store employee observed 53 year old Teresa Sneed, of Poplar Bluff, conceal multiple items into her purse and attempted to leave the store. The total amount of the items was over $225.

Sneed was taken into custody on a charge of 1^st degree burglary.

THREE TEENS ARRESTED IN SIKESTON IN CONNECTION TO SHOTS BEING FIRED

Three teenagers have been taken into custody following a report of shots being fired in Sikeston.

According to the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, officers were alerted to shots being fired during the early morning hours of August 16^th. Officers received a description of the suspect’s vehicle and upon finding the vehicle, attempted to initiate a stop.

The vehicle did not stop and officers gave pursuit. During the chase, police observed what looked like firearms being thrown from the vehicle.

The vehicle eventually came to a stop and three teens were taken into custody. The driver of the vehicle, 19 year old Ralph Holmes, of Cape Girardeau, was charged with attempting to assault a law enforcement officer, armed criminal action and resisting arrest by fleeing.

The names of the two other suspects, who were both 15 years old, were not released.

BUTLER COUNTY ROAD REDUCED FOR PAVEMENT REPAIRS

Route 51 in Butler County is being reduced to one lane daily through September 4^th as contractor crews perform pavement repairs.

The work zone is located between Route 51 and Route B. Work will take place each day from 5 am to 7 pm.

CHAFFEE MAN ACCUSED OF FORCIBLY RAPING PREGNANT WOMAN

A Chaffee man is in custody after he allegedly forcibly raped a pregnant woman.

Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter tells KWOC News that the victim told authorities Friday evening that she had been forcibly raped by 21 year old Landon Klaffer that morning, and held against her will for the remainder of the day.

The victim, who was seven months pregnant, also said that Klaffer had displayed a machete toward her in an angry and threatening manner and physically assaulted her while holding her captive inside a residence.

Klaffer was arrested on charges of 1st degree rape, 1st degree sodomy, 2nd degree domestic assault, felonious restraint, and unlawful use of a weapon.

MAN FACING CHARGES AFTER ALLEGEDLY BEING FOUND WITH CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE AT CORRECTIONAL FACILITY

Authorities say a Hazelwood man is facing multiple charges in connection to his arrest Sunday morning in Wayne County.

Sergeant Clark Parrott with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that 22 year old Kenneth Eubanks is facing a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance in a correctional facility.

Eubanks has also been charged with possession of under 35 grams of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and speeding.

DEXTER RESIDENT ARRESTED ON DRUG WARRANT

A Dexter woman was recently taken into custody on a drug warrant.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 43 year old Debra Sue Brown was arrested on a warrant for possession of a controlled substance.

She was taken to jail and her bond was set at $22,500.

PIEDMONT WOMAN ARRESTED IN WAYNE COUNTY ON HYDROCODONE CHARGE

A Piedmont woman is facing a drug charge following her arrest Saturday night in Wayne County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 53 year old Kimberly Birchfield was arrested shortly after 11 pm Saturday on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – hydrocodone.

She was taken to the Wayne County Jail following her arrest.

MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON WARRANT FOR POSSESSION OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE

Authorities in Stoddard County say an area man has been arrested on a drug warrant.

The Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department tells KWOC News that 40 year old Bobby Dale Kemp, of Dexter, has been taken into custody on a warrant for possession of a controlled substance.

Kemp’s bond was set at $7,500.

SIX PEOPLE INJURED IN BUTLER COUNTY WRECK

Six people were injured Saturday night in a wreck on US 60 in Butler County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred when a vehicle driven by 19 year old Tristan King, of Roseburg, Oregon, was attempting to cross US 60 and was struck in the side by a vehicle driven by 40 year old Tracy Moore of Poplar Bluff.

Both drivers, along with three passengers in Moore’s vehicle, suffered minor injuries. A passenger in King’s vehicle received moderate injuries. They were all taken to a Poplar Bluff hospital following the wreck.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS SET FOR TODAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

Crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation will be in Stoddard County today for pavement repairs on Route N.

During the repairs, Route N will be reduced to one lane between Routes AB and Y.

Work is scheduled to take place today from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm.

BURGLARY LEADS TO POPLAR BLUFF MANS ARREST

A Poplar Bluff man was recently taken into custody following a burglary report.

According Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs, on August 12th deputies received a report of a burglary at a residence on County Road 467. Multiple items were taken including a television and several guns.

An investigation into the burglary led deputies to execute a search warrant at a location on County Road 466. Inside the residence officials found a pistol that matched the serial number of a gun taken during the burglary.

Deputies also found several pistols and other items that matched items that had been reported stolen from other victims.

25 year old Paul Swesey, of Poplar Bluff was arrested on charges of possession of an illegal weapon and receiving stolen property.

PATTERSON MAN ARRESTED IN WAYNE COUNTY ON METH CHARGE

A Patterson man is facing a felony meth charge following his arrest Thursday night in Wayne County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 25 year old Bryan May was taken into custody shortly before 9 pm on a felony charge of possession of methamphetamine.

COMMUNITY SHELTER TRAINING EXERCISE SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER

Area citizens will have the opportunity to learn about shelters at an upcoming event in Butler County.

Butler County Emergency Management Director Robbie Myers tells KWOC News that the Shelter training will be held at the Black River Coliseum beginning on September 11th.

The training, hosted by the American Red Cross, will include shelter simulations along with exercises on setting up and breaking down shelters.

The event is open to the public and will be followed by ceremony to recognize and honor the heroes who lost their life on September 11th.

MAN ACCUSED OF EXPOSING HIMSELF TO SEVERAL PEOPLE IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

An East Prairie man is facing charges after he reportedly exposed himself to several people in Mississippi County.

According to authorities, 80 year old Maurice Woodrow Debaun has been charged with sexual misconduct.

Debaun allegedly intentionally exposed himself to several people at an area subdivision, including a 5 year old girl.

POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL DISTRICT HOSTS SPECIAL LUNCHEON FOR CUSTODIAN AND MAINTENANCE WORKERS

Over 60 custodian and maintenance workers at the Poplar Bluff School District were treated to a special luncheon earlier this month.

Superintendent Chris Hon tells KWOC News that the luncheon was held on August 7th as a token of appreciation for their flexibility with construction taking place at the district’s three largest schools this summer.

POPLAR BLUFF STUDENTS PUT ON SKITS FOR THE COMMUNITY

Members of the Poplar Bluff community were recently invited to watch a series of skits put on by area students.

The skits were a part of the Super Kids Camp at the Wheatley School. The skits featured kids from kindergarten to 6th grade showcasing what they learned over the summer at the camp.

Super Kids is a summer school enrichment program run by volunteers, offered to Butler County elementary students. A total of 31 signed up this year, with 24 reportedly maintaining perfect attendance.

WARRANT OBTAINED FOR SUSPECT IN BLYTHEVILLE SHOOTING

(AP) - Authorities in Blytheville have obtained an arrest warrant for a suspect in a shooting that occurred during a brawl between two Blytheville families that left one person dead and 11 others injured.

Captain Scott Adams of the Blytheville Police Department said Thursday investigators are searching for 27-year-old Billy Dee Williams. Investigators say Williams is a suspect in the Aug. 8 shooting death of 19-year-old Adline King.

King was shot about 11 p.m. on the city's west side. She was transported by friends to an area hospital where she died from her injuries. Authorities say King and another woman, who both have children fathered by the same man, were at the center of the argument.

Adams says anyone with knowledge of where Williams may be should contact the Blytheville Police Department.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED IN CONNECTION TO ALLEGED ASSAULT  

A Poplar Bluff man is facing charges following an alleged assault.

Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs tells KWOC News that 26 year old Bernard Gales has been taken into custody on charges of 2^nd degree domestic assault, felonious restraint, and resist/interfering with an arrest.

The victim told Sheriff’s deputies that early Tuesday morning she had been in an argument with Gales which turned into a physical altercation. The victim said that during the altercation Gales choked her and struck in the side of the face with his fist.

Gales is currently lodged in the Butler County Justice Center on a $50,000 cash only bond.

TWO ARRESTED ON DRUG RELATED WARRANTS IN PEMISCOT COUNTY

Two Poplar Bluff residents were arrested on drug related warrants Wednesday afternoon in Pemiscot County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 38 year old Brian Hill and 32 year old Leslie Patterson were taken into custody shortly before 5 pm Wednesday.

Hill reportedly had a warrant out of Wayne County for felony 2^nd degree trafficking drugs and Patterson has a warrant from Butler County for felony possession of a controlled substance.

AUTHORITIES STILL SEARCHING FOR SUBJECT THAT LED TO SCHOOL LOCKDOWN

We are continuing to follow a story we first brought to you on Tuesday following the lockdown at the Poplar Bluff Senior High School.

Poplar Bluff Police say that a subject that appeared to be carrying a weapon of some sort was observed by a staff member near the High School Tuesday morning.

ALMOST 50 NEW STAFF MEMBERS JOIN POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL DISTRICT THIS YEAR

Students in Poplar Bluff have been back at school for a week and many have met some the numerous new staff members across the school district.

According to Superintendent Chris Hon, Poplar Bluff R-1 welcomed nearly 50 new certified and classified staff members to the school district this year.

The new staff members took part in a three day training session earlier this month that went over many topics including informational sessions on assessment, payroll, and technology.

TWIN RIVERS STUDENTS HEAD BACK TO SCHOOL TODAY

Students in the Twin Rivers School District are on their way back to school this morning for the new school year.

Twin Rivers Superintendent Jeremy Siebert tells KWOC News that not everything has been smooth in the lead up to the school year.

Teacher’s lesson plans and other information were lost last week when the school’s computer servers crashed. A temporary server has been set up following the crash.

Siebert says that the crash caused extra work for teachers in the days before classes were set to begin.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS UNDER WAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route ZZ in Stoddard County is being reduced to one lane through part of next week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

Work will take place through Tuesday, August 25^th from 6:30 am to 5 pm each day.

The work zone is located from U.S. 60 to Route H.

DOGGIE SWIM DAY SCHEDULED FOR AUGUST 30^TH

The Animal Welfare Alliance will be holding Doggie Swim Day on August 30^th.

During the event, area pet owners can swim with their dogs from 2 to 4 pm Sunday at the Poplar Bluff city pool in Hillcrest Park.

Admission is $1 per dog. Charlotte Craig with the Animal Welfare Alliance tells KWOC News that all dogs who attend must be leashed, under adult supervision, and up to date on vaccinations.

BLOOD DRIVE TO BE HELD TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

Anyone who would like to give blood will have an opportunity today in Poplar Bluff.

According to the American Red Cross, a blood drive is scheduled for 1 to 6 pm at Black River Medical Center.

Anyone who can not make the blood drive can also give blood on Friday at the Mingo Job Corps in Puxico or the Church of Christ in Dexter.

POPLAR BLUFF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PUT ON LOCKDOWN  

The Poplar Bluff Senior High School was placed on lockdown shortly after 8 am Tuesday morning following a report of a suspicious person.

Deputy Chief Jeff Rolland with the Poplar Bluff Police Department says a staff member reported seeing a white male, dressed in black run away from the campus across Business Highway 67. An initial report suggested that the subject may have been carrying a weapon of some sort.

Rolland says that there have been no threats of violence, however there will be additional security assigned throughout the district.

The Poplar Bluff Police Department is investigating the matter and anyone who has additional information is encouraged to call 573-686-8653.

GRANT MONEY ALLOWS DEXTER POLICE TO HAVE ADDITIONAL OFFICERS ON PATROL THROUGH SEPTEMBER

Additional officers will be on Dexter’s streets through the end of September.

The Dexter Police Department says additional grant money from the Missouri Department of Transportation will allow them to have additional officers on the road who will be aggressively seeking impaired motorists.

POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT TAKES FIRST PLACE AT QUIZ BOWL TOURNAMENT

A Poplar Bluff High School student recently took first place at a Quiz Bowl camp.

Poplar Bluff Superintendent Chris Hon tells KWOC that Jackson Rideout, the PBHS senior captain, took first place in the history tournament during ACE Quiz bowl camp last month at Lincoln College in Illinois.

Also during the camp, sophomore Alyssa Cook, the JV captain, won second in a team contest; and Christian Cmehil-Warn, a senior starter, qualified to compete with the top performing students from multiple states.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE INVESTIGATING INCIDENT THAT LEFT AREA MAN CRITICALLY INJURED

Poplar Bluff Police are looking for more information into what left an area man with critical injuries Monday evening.

According to authorities, 62 year old Thomas Wiley, of Poplar Bluff, was found unconscious at around 7 pm Monday on Russell Road west of Business Highway 67.

Wiley was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Anyone who has information about the incident is asked to contact the Poplar Bluff Police Department at 573-785-5776.

85^TH ANNUAL GOSPEL SINGING CONVENTION TO BE HELD IN MALDEN

A gospel singing convention will be held next month in Malden.

The 85^th Annual Missouri/Mid-South Gospel Singing Convention has been scheduled for September 25^th and 26^th at the Malden Community Center.

The event will begin at 5 pm each evening and will feature at least 30 groups and artists from several states. In addition to the music, there will also be door prizes and a silent auction. The convention is free and open to the public.

REGISTRATION OPEN FOR ANNUAL BRIDGE BUILDING COMPETITION

Registration is open for the 12^th annual bridge building competition.

The competition challenges high school juniors and seniors in Southeast Missouri to design and construct the most efficient model bridge using limited materials including 15 pieces of balsa wood, thread and glue.

The lightest bridge to carry the greatest load will ultimately be declared the winner. Prizes will also be awarded for the most aesthetic bridge and to the winner of the electronic bridge competition.

Schools must register by September 8^th to participate. The judging for the competition will be held on November 19^th in Cape Girardeau.

BUSINESS 60 TO BE REDUCED TO ONE LANE TODAY AND TOMORROW IN STODDARD COUNTY

Missouri Department of Transportation crews will be in Stoddard County today and tomorrow for drainage repairs on Business 60.

During the repairs, Business 60 will be reduced to one lane from Cooper to Catalpa Street. Work is scheduled to be done from 6:30 am to 5 pm each day.

SEX OFFENDER ARRESTED IN STODDARD COUNTY

A man on the Sex Offender registry was recently taken into custody in Stoddard County.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Office, 34 year old Preston Simpson, of Dexter, was arrested on a warrant for failure to register as a sex offender.

According to the state sex offender registry, Simpson had previously been convicted in Cape Girardeau County on charges of 1st degree statutory rape and child molestation.

THREE ARRESTED FOLLOWING SEARCH OF POPLAR BLUFF RESIDENCE

Three people were arrested earlier this month following the search of a Poplar Bluff residence.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, on Tuesday, August 11th, officers executed a search warrant at the residence of Michael and Ashley Bilbrey. During the search, officers located approximately six ounces of marijuana, suspected hydrocodone, and drug paraphernalia.

Michael and Ashley Bilbrey along with Casual Banks, of Poplar Bluff were each taken into custody on drug and paraphernalia charges.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED AFTER RUNNING FROM BUTLER COUNTY DEPUTY

A Poplar Bluff man was taken into custody Sunday after he allegedly ran from a Butler County Sheriff’s Deputy.

Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs tells KWOC News that 24 year old Terrell Williams was arrested on charges of resisting arrest and distribution of marijuana.

Williams fled from the deputy during a stop near Black Creek Cemetery early Sunday morning. He was later found and arrested at a nearby residence.

Williams reportedly has active warrants through Butler County including sale of a controlled substance near a school and possession of a controlled substance except 35 grams or less of marijuana.

WOMAN ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGE AFTER SHE WAS ALLEGEDLY CAUGHT STEALING FROM AREA BUSINESS

A Williamsville woman is facing multiple charges following an incident at an area business.

According to Deputy Chief Jeff Rolland with the Poplar Bluff Police Department, 33 year old Rebecca Alsup was arrested Saturday on charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of drugs paraphernalia and resisting arrest.

Alsup was reportedly caught taking items from Wal-Mart in Poplar Bluff without paying for them. A Poplar Bluff police officer then found items commonly used in the consumption of methamphetamine in her purse, including a glass smoking pipe with a crystalline substance inside.

A man, Craig Wood, was also taken into custody during the incident.

JERICA FOXX CHOSEN FOR POPLAR BLUFF CITY COUNCIL

The Poplar Bluff City Council has chosen who will fill the seat made vacant by the resignation of Jack Rushin.

The council unanimously approved Jerica Foxx for the Councilman at Large seat during a meeting Monday night.

Foxx will hold the seat until the next Poplar Bluff regular election.

Before Foxx was approved, the council voted on Jim Christman, however he fell one vote short of the four votes needed to appoint someone.

JUVENILE IN CUSTODY FOLLOWING INCIDENT WITH MACHETE

A Juvenile was taken into custody in Northeast Arkansas following an incident with a machete last week.

According to Blytheville Police, a juvenile female told authorities that she had been attacked with a machete by another juvenile on Friday.

The victim suffered several lacerations on her head in the incident. The alleged attacker was taken into custody.

SIKESTON WOMAN ALLEGEDLY CRASHES GOLF CART AND ASSAULTS OFFICER

A Sikeston woman is facing charges after she allegedly crashed a golf cart and assaulted a police officer.

Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter tells KWOC News that 22 year old Crista South has been charged with driving while intoxicated and assault of a law enforcement officer.

Juveniles who had been with South told authorities that she had been driving a golf cart very fast and ran into a ditch. South reportedly admitted to the deputies she had been drinking alcohol.

When she was placed under arrest, she became combative, kicked the windows of a patrol car and struck a deputy in the face with her hand.

South was booked pending the filing of formal charges by the Scott County Prosecuting Attorney.

MISSING KAYAKER FOUND DEAD IN CURRENT RIVER  

Following up on a story we brought to you on Friday, Sheriff Ron Barnett with the Ripley County Sheriff's Department says that a kayaker who went missing Thursday afternoon has been found dead.

The body of 52 year old Russ O’Neal, of Doniphan, was discovered Sunday evening.

O’Neal had been floating downstream when he fell out of the kayak and submerged in Current River south of Doniphan.

ARREST MADE IN NAPA AUTO PARTS ROBBERY

Poplar Bluff police say a man was taken into custody in connection to a robbery at an area auto parts store.

Over two hundred and fifty dollars was allegedly taken from the NAPA Auto Parts store during the robbery. The suspect reportedly left his heart monitor in the store during the incident.

23 year old Kory Carda, of Poplar Bluff, was later taken into custody on charges of stealing and second degree burglary.

NAME RELEASED OF MAN ARRESTED IN HAYDENS ARMED ROBBERY

Poplar Bluff police have released the identity of a man who was arrested after an armed robbery Thursday at Hayden’s Bar-be-que.

David Sutton with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that 55 year old Ronald Lunsford, of Poplar Bluff, was taken into custody on charges of 1^st degree robbery and armed criminal action.

Witnesses told officers that a man who was armed with a knife had fled the restaurant with cash taken from the register.

Lunsford was arrested at his home without incident.

TWO ARRESTED ON METH CHARGES IN WAYNE COUNTY

Two Lowndes residents were taken into custody over the weekend on methamphetamine charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 45 year old John Colbert and 44 year old Tina Skaggs were arrested shortly after 8 pm Saturday in Wayne County.

They are each facing charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine, unlawful use of drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana.

Colbert is also charged with felony unlawful possession of a firearm.

MAN KILLED AFTER GETTING HIT BY TRAIN IN CLAY COUNTY

A Piggott man is dead following a wreck Sunday afternoon involving a train.

According to the Arkansas State Police, 27 year old Aaron Beaver was attempting to cross the railroad tracks on Lincoln Street in Clay County when his vehicle was struck by a train.

Beaver was killed in the wreck. The ASP did not report any other injuries from the collision.

MAN FOUND WITH METH IN POPLAR BLUFF

A Poplar Bluff man is facing multiple charges following his arrest Thursday night.

According to Deputy Chief Jeff Rolland, with the Poplar Bluff Police Department, an officer observed 53 year old David Wallace travelling on a moped shortly after 8 pm Thursday. The officer knew Wallace had a warrant and pulled him over.

Wallace got off the moped and fled on foot. While fleeing, he fell to the ground and was taken into custody.

The officer found two small baggies that contained a substance that field tested positive for methamphetamine in Wallace’s pocket.

Wallace was arrested on charges including possession of drugs – amphetamine and unlawful use of paraphernalia.

PUBLIC HEARING TO BE HELD TONIGHT ON POPLAR BLUFF PROPERTY TAX RATES

Citizens of Poplar Bluff will have the opportunity tonight to have their voice heard about the city’s property tax rates.

A public hearing has been scheduled for 6:45 pm tonight at the City Council Chambers in the City municipal building.

The hearing will allow citizens to speak about the property tax rates proposed by the City Council.

HIGHWAY 51 REPAIRS BEGINNING TODAY IN BUTLER COUNTY

Highway 51 in Butler County is being reduced to one lane beginning today so contractor crews can perform pavement repairs.

The work zone is located between the Arkansas State line and Missouri Route 53.

Work is scheduled to take place through Friday, August 28^th from 5 am to 7 pm daily.

MULTIPLE GUNS SEIZED DURING ARREST IN POPLAR BLUFF  

Narcotics and several guns were seized during an arrest early Wednesday morning in Poplar Bluff.

Deputy Chief Jeff Rowland with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that Tyran Roseburrow was arrested following a report of shots being fired in the area of Cedar and 8^th streets.

Multiple firearms were found in a vehicle Roseburrow had been driving along with a large amount of suspected marijuana.

Roseburrow, who was on probation for possession of a controlled substance, was processed on charges of unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, felony possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a controlled substance.

According to Sergeant Clark Parrott with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 34 year old Jamie Ice has been charged with felony possession of a controlled substance inside jail and possession of a controlled substance – clonazepam.

FIVE APPLICANTS INTERVIEW FOR CITY COUNCIL

Five applicants have interviewed for an opening on the Poplar Bluff City Council.

According to Poplar Bluff Acting City Manager Mark Massingham, the interviews were conducted during a special council session Tuesday evening.

The five people to apply were Jim Chrisman, Jerrica Fox, Susan McVey, Todd Sittig, and Austin Sutton.

The council will vote on the new member during a meeting Monday evening.

NEW SCHOOL YEAR BRINGS CURFEW FOR JUVENILES IN POPLAR BLUFF

Kids in Poplar Bluff are returning to school today and the Poplar Bluff Police Department wants to remind juveniles to be aware of curfew rules in the city.

According to Captain Don Trout, any person under 17 years old is not allowed to be on the city streets from midnight to 6 am on Friday and Saturday nights. The curfew begins at 11 pm on all other nights.

Juveniles are also not allowed to be on city streets during normal school hours unless they are accompanied by a parent, there is an emergency, or they are travelling to or from work.

CONSTRUCTION TO CAUSE INCREASED TRAFFIC CONGESTION AROUND POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOLS

The construction of new buildings at various Poplar Bluff school sites will cause delays for those travelling around the schools beginning today.

Poplar Bluff Police Chief Danny Whitely tells KWOC News officers will be at every school for the next few days to help with traffic routes and to ensure the safety of students. The construction is also causing changes to how parents and students will access the school campuses.

According to the Poplar Bluff School District, at the 5^th and 6^th grade center, parents will enter the campus via Oak Grove Road and loop around the eastern parking lot to the back of the building. There will also be designated lanes marked to separate bus traffic. Vehicles must exit the campus on the north end.

At the Senior High on Victory Lane, student drop-off will take place at A-Building on Highland Drive on the north side of campus.

After school, Highland will be closed along with Woodland and Meadowbrook Lane while buses stack from 2:45 to 3:20 p.m., after which parents will be permitted to arrive for pick-up. Student drivers will exit via the south end onto Harper Road.

Student parking will be assigned and include the spaces around Kay Porter Theater this year. The Highland Drive Church of Christ has offered use of its parking lot for overflow.

SHOOTING SUSPECT IN CUSTODY IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

A shooting suspect has been apprehended in Dunklin County.

According to Dunklin County Sheriff Bob Holder, Richard Lynn Samples was shot in the leg at his home in Kennett Wednesday morning.

Samples was shot during a fight with his grandson, who had allegedly just broken into the home with a gun and told his grandparents that he wanted their money. Samples was taken to an area hospital following the incident.

Samples grandson, Thackary Brian Moore, was later taken into custody following a car chase with authorities that went through Pemiscot and Dunklin Counties.

Moore is in custody in Dunklin County and awaiting formal charges.

THREE RIVERS OFFERING UPGRADED IT SPECIALIST PROGRAM

Three Rivers College is offering computer savvy students a new option if they would like to begin a career in technology.

Heather Carlton, Instructor of Information Systems Technology at Three Rivers tells KWOC News that the college’s Network Administration degree track has been upgraded into a new IT Specialist program.

Carlton says that the college consulted with local employers to help focus the program on exactly what students need to be learning and the kind of skills that will make them stand out in a job interview.

The new IT Specialist program features a two-year associate degree track, as well as a one-year certificate. More information is available online at TRCC.edu. Students are able to register for classes through August 14^th.

Juveniles are also not allowed to be on city streets during normal school hours unless they are accompanied by a parent, there is an emergency, or they are travelling to or from work.

CONSTRUCTION TO CAUSE INCREASED TRAFFIC CONGESTION AROUND POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOLS

The construction of new buildings at various Poplar Bluff school sites will cause delays for those travelling around the schools beginning today.

Poplar Bluff Police Chief Danny Whitely tells KWOC News officers will be at every school for the next few days to help with traffic routes and to ensure the safety of students. The construction is also causing changes to how parents and students will access the school campuses.

According to the Poplar Bluff School District, at the 5^th and 6^th grade center, parents will enter the campus via Oak Grove Road and loop around the eastern parking lot to the back of the building. There will also be designated lanes marked to separate bus traffic. Vehicles must exit the campus on the north end.

At the Senior High on Victory Lane, student drop-off will take place at A-Building on Highland Drive on the north side of campus.

After school, Highland will be closed along with Woodland and Meadowbrook Lane while buses stack from 2:45 to 3:20 p.m., after which parents will be permitted to arrive for pick-up. Student drivers will exit via the south end onto Harper Road.

Student parking will be assigned and include the spaces around Kay Porter Theater this year. The Highland Drive Church of Christ has offered use of its parking lot for overflow.

SHOOTING SUSPECT IN CUSTODY IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

A shooting suspect has been apprehended in Dunklin County.

According to Dunklin County Sheriff Bob Holder, Richard Lynn Samples was shot in the leg at his home in Kennett Wednesday morning.

Samples was shot during a fight with his grandson, who had allegedly just broken into the home with a gun and told his grandparents that he wanted their money. Samples was taken to an area hospital following the incident.

Samples grandson, Thackary Brian Moore, was later taken into custody following a car chase with authorities that went through Pemiscot and Dunklin Counties.

Moore is in custody in Dunklin County and awaiting formal charges.

THREE RIVERS OFFERING UPGRADED IT SPECIALIST PROGRAM

Three Rivers College is offering computer savvy students a new option if they would like to begin a career in technology.

Heather Carlton, Instructor of Information Systems Technology at Three Rivers tells KWOC News that the college’s Network Administration degree track has been upgraded into a new IT Specialist program.

Carlton says that the college consulted with local employers to help focus the program on exactly what students need to be learning and the kind of skills that will make them stand out in a job interview.

The new IT Specialist program features a two-year associate degree track, as well as a one-year certificate. More information is available online at TRCC.edu. Students are able to register for classes through August 14^th.

STODDARD COUNTY ROAD REDUCED TODAY FOR PAVEMENT REPAIRS

Route N in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform pavement repairs.

The work zone is located from Route AB to Route 91.

Work will take place today from 7:30 am to 4 pm.
